Digital Storytelling Workshop - Bellevue WA - Ages 8-11

January 6th to March 21st, 2025 - Bellevue WA

Our 10-week Digital Storytelling Workshop for kids ages 8-11 offers a unique, hands-on experience where young creators can unleash their imagination! Over the course of the program, students will collaborate in small groups of 2-3 to produce a variety of digital shorts, including music videos, short films, experimental films, stop-motion videos, and animated shorts.

With 8 weeks dedicated to production and 2 weeks focused on event planning, students will complete at least three exciting projects while learning teamwork and creativity. Small class sizes (10-15 students) ensure personalized guidance, and the program runs twice a week for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Priced at $350 per student, this workshop is an amazing opportunity for young storytellers to bring their ideas to life and share them with the world!

Students will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm to 5:45pm, Pick up by 6pm.

At the end of the program, students will plan a special Film Premiere Party where friends and family can celebrate their creativity and hard work, showcasing the exciting films they've produced throughout the workshop. It's a fun and memorable way to honor their journey as young filmmakers!

Digital Storytelling Workshop Outline (Ages 8-11) – 10 Weeks

Weeks 1-2: Introduction & Project 1 – Stop-Motion Animation

Objective: Students will learn the basics of stop-motion animation, focusing on storytelling through simple, frame-by-frame techniques.

Activities:

  • Introduction to stop-motion software and materials (e.g., clay, paper cutouts, or toys).

  • Storyboarding and planning short animated scenes.

  • Shooting and editing their stop-motion films in small groups.

Outcome: Each group will produce a short stop-motion animation (30-60 seconds).

Weeks 3-4: Project 2 – Experimental Film

Objective: Students will explore creative, non-traditional storytelling methods using visuals, sounds, and effects to evoke emotions and ideas.

Activities:

  • Introduction to experimental filmmaking techniques (slow motion, time-lapse, abstract visuals).

  • Group brainstorming and collaboration to develop unique ideas.

  • Shooting and editing an experimental short film.

Outcome: Each group will create an experimental film that encourages out-of-the-box thinking.

Weeks 5-6: Project 3 – Music Video

Objective Students will create a music video, learning how to sync visuals with music and tell a story or theme through rhythm and movement.

Activities:

  • Choose a song (pre-selected list or royalty-free music) and develop a visual concept.

  • Choreograph or plan scenes that match the music's tone and rhythm.

  • Shoot and edit the music video.

Outcome: Each group will complete a music video that enhances the song with creative visuals.

Weeks 7-8: Project 4 – Short Film

Objective: Students will create a short narrative film, working on character development, dialogue, and traditional storytelling structure.

Activities:

  • Scriptwriting, storyboarding, and planning.

  • Filming and editing their short films in groups.

  • Focus on teamwork, acting, and directing.

Outcome: Each group will finish a 1-2 minute short film, showcasing their storytelling skills.

Weeks 9-10: Event Planning – Film Premiere Party

Objective: Students will organize a film premiere event, inviting family and friends to watch their completed projects.

Activities:

  • Plan the event details (theme, decorations, invitations).

  • Organize the film screening and event agenda.

  • Practice presenting their work to an audience and celebrating their achievements.

Outcome: The final Film Premiere Party will serve as a culmination of the workshop, allowing students to proudly share their projects with their community and celebrate their journey as budding filmmakers.
